Tips & Tricks
What’s the best way to wash my wool item?
Wool is one of the most remarkable materials nature gives us. It breathes, regulates temperature and adapts to your baby’s body. In summer, wool keeps cool; in winter, it keeps them comfortably warm.
What many people don’t know is that wool is naturally self-cleaning. Thanks to its lanolin (natural wool grease), it repels dirt and bacteria. This means wool needs washing much less often than other fabrics. Simply airing it out is often enough to keep it fresh. That makes wool not only practical, but also sustainable and kind to the planet.
Thanks to its antibacterial and hypoallergenic properties, wool is ideal for babies and young children with sensitive skin. It helps keep the skin balanced and creates a healthy, dry sleeping environment. Wool feels soft without being scratchy, and provides a safe, cosy feeling.
At Woolskins, we believe good care begins with understanding the material. Knowing how wool behaves also helps you understand how long it lasts. With a little care, your wool footmuff or blanket will stay beautiful for years—a natural source of comfort that grows with your child.
Correct temperature
Did you wash it at 30 degrees?
Never hot or cold! Wool fibers can be shocked by temperatures that are too cold, which can also cause shrinkage. It’s important to wash your wool product carefully and according to the instructions.
Hand wash
As a rule, we recommend hand-washing wool. But this also carries some risks. Wool should be washed at 30 degrees, which feels quite cold.
Few people check the water with a thermometer. Washing in water that is too hot or too cold can cause shrinkage. People also often use too much detergent when hand-washing and may not rinse it out thoroughly. Wringing too hard is another risk.
Hand-washing: Use 15-30 ml of Woolskins wool wash per 5 liters of water.
Machine was
If you want to machine wash wool, use the wool wash cycle. Make sure the spin speed is no higher than 600 rpm. Again, a high spin speed will shrink your wool clothes.
Also important: wash wool with wool. Don’t add jeans or clothes with zippers. We don’t recommend machine washing our Teddy wool (read more alongside).
Machine wash: Use 30 ml of Woolskins wool wash per kilo.
Teddy wants
To keep this woolly teddy fabric beautiful and soft, we recommend washing these products by hand only at a maximum temperature of 30 °C.
Handle with care and use a mild detergent for wool. Avoid bleach, ironing, tumble drying, and spinning.
Lay the fabric flat to dry to help it retain its shape. Dry cleaning is also possible.
Wool detergent with lanolin

Wool naturally contains a type of fat called lanolin. It gives wool a soft protective layer against dirt and helps it retain heat in cold weather. It also keeps the wool elastic and less prone to wear. You can continue to enjoy all these properties by using a special wool detergent that contains lanolin. Special wool detergents also never contain bleach, which is disastrous for wool.
Our tip:
Wool doesn’t need to be washed often. Simply airing it outside is often enough to keep the fabric fresh.

How do I wash my medicinal sheepskin
Washing a sheepskin
Follow these steps to wash a sheepskin gently.
01. Place the sheepskin in the washing machine and add 50 ml of Eco Wool Wash to the detergent drawer.
02. Wash the sheepskin on a 30°C wool/delicates cycle (short cycles).
03. Lay the sheepskin leather-side down on a towel and roll it up. Press firmly so that as much of the remaining water as possible is absorbed by the towel.
04. Leave the sheepskin to dry on a flat surface or in the tumble dryer on a low, NOT HOT, setting.
05. Then leave the sheepskin to dry a little longer and gently stretch it back into shape.
After washing, the leather side may feel a little stiffer. It will soften again naturally with use.
To wash washable sheepskins, we recommend using our Eco Wool Wash wool detergent.
This eco-friendly olive oil-based detergent helps retain the natural oils and contains lanolin to preserve the sheepskin’s healthy properties and suppleness.
